Adult: (breeding) (shown below) Brown head with a white forehead. Dark long thick bill. White throat and collar. Black breast band, white underparts, brown back tail and wings. Pinkish gray legs.

Adult: (non-breeding) Brown head with a white forehead. Dark long thick bill. White throat and collar. White underparts, greyish brown back, breast band, tail and wings. Pinkish gray legs.

Juvenile: very similar to the non-breeding adult.
