The Northern Flicker:
MALE: (Shown below) The flicker is very distinct in his shape, colors, and characteristics. At first glance he looks like a small woodpecker. He has a long bill, orange crown on his head, red streak under his eyes, and a black shield on his chest. He has brown with black stripes on his feathers, a black spotted belly, white rump, and orang/red color under his wings.
FEMALE: Exactly like the male except she does not have the red streak under her eyes.
On May 9th I saw a northern flicker male for the first time, which I was really excited about. I love the flicker personally he is one of my favorite birds (so far)! Well over the last few weeks I have been kinda watching him and keeping an eye on him. I was hoping that other flickers would come into the area, sadly they did not. He is the ONLY one I have seen from Yosemite, to Groveland, to Sonora, and to La Grange (CALIFORNIA). Well this morning I was backing out of my driveway and a little up the road from my house, under the tree where he liked to "hang out" he was dead on the side of the road. I moved him out of the road (don't worry I was careful and did not touch him directly). I sure hope there are many more flickers that will gather in my area this summer.
