Belted Kingfisher

Adults in general: very jumpy species. If it is perched within human view for more than 1 minute it is nto a Kingfisher (by experience). Blue overall, mostly I.D.'d by the unique shape of the crest, large bill, and small body. Hovers over the water )like a humming bird) before divind head first into the water after fish and other small prey animals.

Adult male: (shown below) Dark blue head, face, and shaggy crest. White spot on face just between the bill and eye. Dark bill with white at the very base (not visible from a distance), white collar, dark blue band on chest, white belly, dark blue back and wings. White wing patch on top of wings when flying.

Adult female: (shown below) Dark blue head, face, and shaggy crest. White spot on face just between the bill and eye. Dark bill with white at the very base (not visible from a distance), white collar, dark blue band on chest with a Red'ish / dark brown'ish band between the white belly. Dark blue back and wings. White wing patch on top of wings when flying.

Juvenile: Identical to the adult female.
